JAMES CONSTABLE

James Constable is currently in the second year of an English degree course run by the University of Exeter, part of the Combined Universities in Cornwall, at the Tremough campus in Penryn.

Originally from Tunbridge Wells, he wanted a complete lifestyle change when choosing where to further his education and Cornwall provided the perfect solution. He explains "I wanted to go to University, but I also wanted to stay healthy and be able to enjoy the outdoors- go to the beach, surf and rock climb. I feel very lucky that I have the opportunity to do all of this, but I also think it's important that everyone should have the chance to take part in activities and sport"

James had heard about the work of Mencap- the UK's leading learning disability charity which fights for equal rights and greater opportunities for people with learning disabilities. The Falmouth and Exeter Students' Union (FXU) were recruiting volunteers for a national project run jointly by Mencap and Blue Peter- "The Get Together Programme" and his interest in helping others led James to join the scheme along with a group of fellow students.

Under the programme, Mencap trains volunteers to understand the needs of children and young people aged 5 to16 years with learning disabilities and helps them to empathise with the different challenges they face. This enables the volunteers to then assist the children in accessing activities and facilities they might not have been able to before, so that they can be included and supported.

James has found the experience very rewarding "It's a lot of hard work and you have to have commitment, but I want to make a difference and give something back."

The Volunteering opportunities provided by FXU, allows students to assist local charities and community groups in a diverse range of projects- from ecological activities to fundraising, regeneration and caring. Not only does this provide invaluable benefits within the county, but it also enriches the experience of the students themselves- allowing them to express and develop their compassion for others.
