News - University Fair Showcases Education Options

University of Exeter press release

People from across Cornwall - from promising artists to budding zoologists - will discover the range of higher education opportunities available in the UK at an event at the Tremough Campus, Penryn.

Organised by Connexions and the University of Exeter and University College Falmouth, which share the Tremough Campus, the UCAS Higher Education Convention takes place on Wednesday 17 March.

100 UK universities will join Cornwall's own universities and colleges to help local youngsters decide what to study and where. 2,500 year 12 students from all over Cornwall are expected to attend and find out what is on offer from UK universities, including those in Cornwall. Students can visit the Connexions stand at the Convention for immediate advice about their options. They can also find out more about studying a particular subject or issues like student life, taking a gap year and student finance.

Professor Mark Overton, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for the University of Exeter, said: "This event is a great opportunity for people living in Cornwall to find out about the wealth of university courses now available in the UK. It will also showcase what is now on offer in Cornwall, where higher education is now flourishing through the CUC initiative. We very much look forward to welcoming people to the Campus."

The Cornwall UCAS Higher Education Convention is organised by Connexions and the University of Exeter and University College Falmouth in conjunction with UCAS and HELOA. Local exhibitors, which are all part of the Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC) initiative, are Cornwall College, the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry, Truro and Penwith College, University College Falmouth, the University of Exeter and University of Plymouth.

The £100 million Tremough Campus is a Combined Universities in Cornwall initiative -of which the University of Exeter and University College Falmouth are two of the founding partners. It is funded mainly by the European Union (Objective One), the South West Regional Development Agency, and the Higher Education Funding Council for England, with support from Cornwall County Council. Set in 70 acres of countryside, but close to the waterside towns of Penryn and Falmouth, the campus offers a lively student community. The University of Exeter now offers degrees in Biology, Modern Celtic and Cornish Studies, English, Geology, Geography, History, Law, Mining Engineering, Politics and Renewable Energy on the Tremough Campus, which has expanded rapidly as part of the Combined Universities in Cornwall initiative.

Connexions is the Government's specialist careers and advisory service, providing impartial information, advice and guidance to all 13-19 year olds across Cornwall and Devon.
