News - Experiencing the Call of Confex

Cornwall College press release

Potential event managers from Cornwall College Camborne visited the country's capital to experience the wonders of International Confex recently - Britain's biggest trade event for meetings, incentive travel, conference and exhibition professionals.

Fourteen students studying for the FdA Event Management, approved by the University of Plymouth, travelled to London to discover more about the industry they're hoping to pursue a career in. From party organisers to venue managers, charity fund-raising to conference planning, overseas destinations to production; the exhibition has fantastic business, education and networking opportunities.

"The students were able to find out and appreciate just how large and diverse the industry is, and more importantly, where they could end up working after graduation, said Matt Kirby, FdA Event Management Programme Manager. "I am a real advocate for out-of-classroom learning and this trip to London has done much to broaden the students' understanding of the industry they are studying."

International Confex showcases the huge diversity of careers and specialist services that the students could aim to be a part of and reinforces the events industry's inextricable link with the tourism infrastructure. Study trips and residential visits are an integral part of the FdA course; students learn so much through first-hand experience and exploration.

Hayley Ashworth, 18, from Penzance said: "There was an excellent free seminar programme and lots of live demonstrations, practical advice and even some free massages!"

"Confex was brilliant, really worthwhile and interesting, let's do it again next year!" added Emily Laity, 20, from Falmouth.

Dave Linnell OBE, Principal of Cornwall College, said: "At Cornwall College we make every effort to ensure that students benefit from these kinds of trips, mixing education with pleasure and giving them a chance to experience new ideas and cultures - allowing them to develop their knowledge and character."

All university level courses at Cornwall College are accredited by the University of Plymouth.
