News - AimHigher Peninsula Programme Recognises Student Success

Students who have participated in Aimhigher activities have been recognised for their achievements at a special event held at the China Fleet Country Club, Saltash. In front of an audience of over 100 delegates winners of the Aimhigher Peninsula Programme Awards explained how their involvement in the programme had raised their aspirations to study in higher education, helped with their studies and increased their self-confidence and self-esteem.

The Aimhigher Peninsula Programme also recognized the contribution made by Student Ambassadors and Student Associates - higher education students from across the South West peninsula who support the programme by participating in activities such as master classes, campus visits, summer schools and by providing mentoring support for school and college students.

Carly Warburton, a former employee of the University of Plymouth, who is studying for a Foundation Degree in Complementary Health Studies at City College Plymouth, won the Student Ambassador award.

Margarita Jost, who graduated from the University of Plymouth with a degree in Multimedia, Production and Technology in summer 2010, won the Student Associate Award.

Programme Manager Carolyn Stoakes said: "The learner is at the centre of everything we do. The conference gave learners the opportunity to demonstrate the impact that the programme has had on them and all the delegates were inspired by their commitment and enthusiasm."

In addition to the prize presentation students were also involved in the event in a number of ways. Students from St James' School showcased animations they had produced to show their plans for the future progressing from school to university to a variety of different occupations. They also acted as roving reporters of the event producing a visual record of the event which was screened to delegates at the end of the day. Students from Helston Community College led a drama workshop focusing on future aspirations and hopes.

Awards were also presented to Key Stage 3 learners: Jordan Bassett, Tor Bridge High (Plymouth); Leo Mackenzie, Helston Community College; Xequi Gong , Helston Community College and Key Stage 4 learners: Chloe Aquilina, Sir John Hunt Community Sports College (Plymouth); Liam Knight, The Park Community School (Barnstaple); Hazel Clarke, The Park Community School (Barnstaple); Kayleigh Morris, St James' School (Exeter). Elsa Hastings from Ilfracombe Arts College was the winner in the post-16 learner category.
