News - Cornish Youngsters Learn About HE

University of Exeter press release

2,500 young people from across Cornwall will discover the wealth of higher education opportunities available to them at an event at the Tremough Campus, Penryn. Organised by Connexions Cornwall and Devon and the University of Exeter and University College Falmouth, which share the Tremough Campus, the UCAS Higher Education Convention takes place on 18 March.

100 UK universities, from Aberdeen to Oxford to Belfast, will join Cornwall's own universities and colleges to help local youngsters decide what to study and where. 2,500 year 12 students from all over Cornwall are expected to attend and find out what universities from across the UK, including those in Cornwall, can offer. Students can visit the Connexions stand at the Convention for immediate advice about their options for HE. They will also have the chance to attend seminars on individual subjects, from art to zoology, and on issues like student life, taking a gap year and student finance.

Professor Matthew Evans, Provost for the University of Exeter's Cornwall Campus, said: "We are proud to be hosting this event at Tremough for the second year running. This is a great opportunity for young people to find out about the amazing, but sometimes overwhelming, range of higher education options. We hope that the event will help young people in Cornwall make the important decision of where to continue their education. We also hope they will be inspired by the growing range of opportunities on their doorstep."

University College Falmouth Rector, Professor Alan Livingston, added:  "We look forward to welcoming the students of the future to the Tremough Campus, and to helping them fulfil their potential.  Higher Education is a driving force for good, particularly in times of economic downturn, and the wealth of opportunities that await the next generation of students has never been greater."

The Cornwall UCAS Higher Education Convention is organised by Connexions Cornwall and Devon and the University of Exeter and University College Falmouth in conjunction with UCAS and HELOA. Local exhibitors, which are all part of the Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC) initiative, are Cornwall College, the Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry, Truro and Penwith College, University College Falmouth, the University of Exeter and University of Plymouth.

The £100 million Tremough campus is a CUC initiative ¬of which the University of Exeter and University College Falmouth are two of the founding partners.  The campus is shared and jointly managed by University College Falmouth and the University of Exeter in an arrangement that is unique in the UK.  It is funded mainly by the European Union (Objective One), the South West Regional Development Agency, and the Higher Education Funding Council for England, with support from Cornwall County Council. Set in 70 acres of countryside, but close to the waterside towns of Penryn and Falmouth, the campus offers a lively student community.

Connexions Cornwall and Devon is the Government's specialist careers and advisory service, providing impartial information, advice and guidance to all 13-19 year olds across the peninsula.
