News - PR Students Land Plum Placements

University College Falmouth press release

From high fashion to high art, BA (Hons) Public Relations students at University College Falmouth will get a taste of the Public Relations industry at the highest level when they embark upon work placements as part of their studies following the Easter break.

Giorgio Armani, Tate St Ives, The Eden Project and some of the UK's most prestigious PR firms including London agencies Frank, Borkowski and Henry's House, and Truro's mpad have all offered placements of up to a month's duration.

Second year student, Leila Heppell, who starts her placement at Georgio Armani in London¹s Bond Street on 5 May, having turned down placement offers from Jimmy Choo and Top Shop, said: "I'm fascinated by fashion PR, so I'm thrilled to be going to such a high-profile placement.  I can't wait to see if the reality matches my expectations."

Course Leader, Jon Cope said: "It's testament to the quality of this group of students that employers have snapped them up for placements.  I have no doubt that following these placements, each of them will have gained invaluable knowledge of the fast-paced world of PR today, and that these important industry connections will be beneficial to their employment opportunities upon graduation next year."

Other students heading to London and the surrounding area are, Claire Breakey who joins Borkowski PR, winner of the 2008 PR Week Award for Best Campaign for the relaunch of the Wispa chocolate bar; Kate Stott joining European PR Agency of the Year, Frank PR; Jayme Browning who will work with celebrity PR firm, Henry's House and finally, motoring enthusiast Luke Durkin who is raring to go to Ford Motor Company in Essex.

There are also students who have chosen to stay in Cornwall for their placements and these include, Lauren Rees who hopes to gain valuable experience in PR for the arts at Tate St Ives, and Ellie May joining Truro PR and marketing consultancy, mpad.

University College Falmouth is the only independent Higher Education institution in Cornwall with the powers to award degrees in its own name.  It has two campuses in Cornwall - at Woodlane in Falmouth and Tremough in Penryn (which it owns, and jointly manages with the University of Exeter) - and a third campus at Totnes in Devon, following its merger with Dartington College of Arts in 2008.

This merger created a new institution focusing on the expansion of Falmouth's expertise in Art, Design and Media and Dartington's expertise in Choreography, Music, Theatre, Art and Writing.  The Devon-based courses will relocate to a new, high-specification Performance Centre at Tremough in 2010, paving the way for a new specialist Arts University in Cornwall by 2012, that will be unique to the South West.

The College is a founding partner in the Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC), a unique initiative to promote regional economic regeneration through Higher Education, funded mainly by the European Union, the South West Regional Development Agency, and the Higher Education Funding Council for England, with support from Cornwall County Council.
