News - New Foundation Degree in Animal Business Management

Cornwall College press release

A new Foundation Degree (FdSc) in Animal Business Management is being offered at Duchy College Rosewarne and Cornwall College Camborne from September 2009.

This course awarded by the University of Plymouth is designed for those who would like to work within the animal industry in a financial, administrative or management capacity. Foundation Degrees are designed with employers and combine work-related and academic elements.   The College went through a lengthy consultation period with local animal and veterinary related business leaders to create a course that will best fulfil animal industry and student needs.

Carol Knight, Curriculum Area Manager for Animal Care, said "By consulting with local businesses we made sure that the skills and knowledge that students gain during the course are relevant to their future employment.  The new FdSc has a great balance of animal care, delivered at Duchy College Rosewarne and business modules which are delivered at Cornwall College, Camborne".

Specialist animal care modules include the study of Animal Husbandry, Animal Behaviour and Animal Nutrition. Students will all have the opportunity to discuss and explore new and developing concepts in the animal industry and will be required to complete a research project in an area of individual interest in their second year. Students will be taught in the new Shepherd building, opened at Rosewarne in November 2007, within which is located a simulation Veterinary Practice.  Practical elements of the course are to be delivered in the brand new Animal Care Unit which will enable students to work with real animals ranging from exotics to large animals.

A range of business modules designed to provide a solid business foundation will be taught at Cornwall College Camborne and include Business and Employment Law, Business Environment, Human Resource Management and Management Accounting.

The new FdSc Animal Business Management may be studied full time over 2 years or part time over 3 or 4 years. Animal Care or business modules may also be studied individually or as a total of 60 credits to qualify for a Certificate of Professional development. There may also be funding and bursaries available in some circumstances.

Dave Linnell OBE principal of Cornwall College of which Duchy College is a part said, "This new course will hopefully fill in the education gap in Animal Care and Veterinary Nursing We are very proud of the new Veterinary Nursing and Animal Care facilities at Rosewarne which we believe adds to the quality of our provision."
