News - New Advisory Board

University of Exeter press release

People living in Cornwall are invited to help shape the future of higher education in their home county, with the launch of a new advisory board for the University of Exeter. The University is inviting people from across Cornwall to apply to be board members and advise on issues relating to its Tremough Campus, near Penryn.

The new board will advise the University about developments in Cornwall. It will act as a forum for discussion about Cornish issues that affect the University and topical issues from across Cornwall. The University of Exeter hopes the board will also help communicate its activities and future plans to people living in Cornwall.

The University of Exeter shares and jointly manages the Tremough Campus with University College Falmouth as part of the Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC) initiative, in an arrangement that is unique in the UK. On the Tremough Campus the University of Exeter conducts research and teaching in a range of subjects, from mining engineering to law.

The University of Exeter has ambitious plans to build an internationally-competitive research and teaching centre for the environment and sustainability at Tremough, which will give Cornwall the opportunity to become a world-leader in generating environmental knowledge.

To support its future developments, the University is looking for people with board-level or senior management experience in public or private sector organisations with a high profile in Cornwall. The group will meet three times a year, in Cornwall.

Anyone who is interested in applying to join the board, should contact Gillian Weale on 01392 26 3045 or g.l.weale@exeter.ac.uk.

University of Exeter Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Mark Overton said: "We have been active in Cornwall for many years: the Institute of Cornish Studies and Camborne School of Mines joined the University in 1970 and 1993 respectively and we launched the Tremough Campus in 2004. We're one of the founding partners of CUC and our success to date is a result of us working in partnership with organisations and individuals in Cornwall and beyond. We hope that this new advisory board will give us the support we need to continue to offer a world-class education and conduct internationally-renowned research in Cornwall."

The £100 million Tremough Campus is a Combined Universities in Cornwall initiative ¬of which the University of Exeter and University College Falmouth are two of the founding partners. It is funded mainly by the European Union (Objective One), the South West Regional Development Agency, and the Higher Education Funding Council for England, with support from Cornwall County Council. Set in 70 acres of countryside, but close to the waterside towns of Penryn and Falmouth, the campus offers a lively student community. The University of Exeter now offers degrees in Biology, Modern Celtic and Cornish Studies, English, Geology, Geography, History, Law, Mining Engineering, Politics and Renewable Energy on its Tremough Campus, which has expanded rapidly as part of the Combined Universities in Cornwall initiative.
