News - University Maintains Top Five Position

University of Exeter press release

Students on the Tremough Campus, Penryn, are among the most satisfied in the UK, according to this year's National Student Survey.

The University of Exeter, which shares the Tremough Campus with University College Falmouth through the Combined Universities in Cornwall initiative, ranks fourth out of traditional universities in the survey of 272 UK universities and colleges.

Exeter ranks highest in the South West and just one place below Cambridge. The University has maintained its top 10 position since the survey was launched five years ago.

The University of Exeter achieved a score of 90% for overall satisfaction, against a national average of 81%. Excluding niche colleges and specialist universities (including the Open University and the University of Buckingham), Exeter ranks fourth in the survey for overall satisfaction.

Professor Janice Kay, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Education, said: "We are very proud to have maintained our top 10 position in the National Student Survey for five years running. We pride ourselves on providing an excellent experience for our students and strive to make their time with us enjoyable and rewarding.

"Over the past five years we have invested more than £140 million in new facilities on our campuses in Exeter and Cornwall. On our Cornwall Campus we have ambitious plans to develop new student facilities and a world-leading research centre focusing on environment and sustainability. We believe this investment is vital to maintaining the wonderful environment for studying and living that our students deserve."

The total number of students who responded to the fifth annual National Student Survey increased this year by over 3,000 to 223,363 students. A total of 155 higher education institutions (HEIs) across the UK and 117 further education colleges (FECs) in England took part.

Students are asked to rate their experience in teaching, assessment and feedback, academic support, organisation and management, learning resources, personal development and overall satisfaction.

The £100 million Tremough Campus is a Combined Universities in Cornwall initiative ¬of which the University of Exeter and University College Falmouth are two of the founding partners. It is funded mainly by the European Union (Objective One), the South West Regional Development Agency, and the Higher Education Funding Council for England, with support from Cornwall County Council. Set in 70 acres of countryside, but close to the waterside towns of Penryn and Falmouth, the campus offers a lively student community. The University of Exeter now offers degrees in Biology, Modern Celtic and Cornish Studies, English, Geology, Geography, History, Law, Mining Engineering, Politics and Renewable Energy on the Tremough Campus, which has expanded rapidly as part of the Combined Universities in Cornwall initiative.
