News - Learn to Create Glorious Gardens

University College Falmouth press release

If gardens are your passion and you are interested in contemporary garden design, then join international award-winner, author, columnist, and Channel 4's City Gardener, Matt James and bestselling author of the Garden Maker's Manual and Chelsea Flower Show award winner, Richard Sneesby at University College Falmouth's three-day short course in July for an invaluable insight into how to make your garden grow.

You will learn the key concepts and ideas that underpin the design of successful outdoor spaces from two of the leading lights in garden design - celebrating both traditional values with a contemporary interpretation whilst considering the architecture and design of gardens.

As well as lectures and workshops on creating structure, defining space and selecting plants, there will also be visits to some of Cornwall's most beautiful gardens, such as Bosvigo, which was rated by The Daily Telegraph as one of its Gardens of the Millennium, and Lamorran House, situated on the stunning Roseland Peninsula with its favoured microclimate, where you will learn about the layout and content of these sumptuous gardens in design terms.

"We will also show you how to develop your own ideas, how to apply the design principles you have learned and how to communicate your design intentions to suppliers, builders, specialists and contractors," explains Richard Sneesby, who has also presented two successful television series and is Course Leader of University College Falmouth's groundbreaking degree course in Garden Design.

"You will learn how to design a wide range of gardens too - from show gardens to your own outdoor space," adds Matt James, who has recently joined the course team at Falmouth.  Although Matt is best known as The City Gardener, he has also authored a documentary for Channel 4's The Insider programme about the unacceptable loss of green space in our towns and cities, and has won a raft of prestigious awards including Londoner of the Year for his championing of farmers markets in South London and Surrey, and two awards for his garden designs in California at the CCLA Annual State-wide Trophy Awards:  1st place for  a modern Mediterranean retreat in 2006, and in 2007, the Outstanding Achievement Award for a contemporary tropical garden in Venice, CA.  "Whether you're interested in pursuing a career in garden design or simply want to gain the skills and confidence to tackle your own garden space, this course is not only taking place in one of the most glorious coastal environments in the UK, but will also be informative and fun," adds Matt.

The three-day course runs from Wednesday 23 July to Friday 25 July. For more information and a booking form, please visit http://www.falmouth.ac.uk/business, email business@falmouth.ac.uk or telephone Business Relations on 01326 370444.
