News - Annual Photography Exhibition

University College Falmouth press release

An amazing 70 second year students on the BA(Hons) Photography course at University College Falmouth will be exhibiting a diverse array of photographs as a celebration of both traditional photographic processes and contemporary digital creativity at their first major show.

This year's annual exhibition looks to be one of the most cutting-edge to date as it brings into sharp focus the diversity of practice and individualism that is a hallmark of this award winning course - leaving no one in any doubt of the extraordinary talent and ability of University College Falmouth's second year photography students.

"In their second year of study the students work on a range of projects which have then been submitted to national photographic competitions as well as self-devised assessments" explained Course Leader, Tony Clancy.  "On the first year of the course students are given a range of set briefs, but the work for this exhibition comes from the second year where they are developing their own style and finding new ways to express their ideas which makes it an exciting and pivotal point in their development".

All of the students appreciate the opportunity and experience an exhibition of this type affords them in understanding the impact and importance of showing their work to critics and the general public.  "Up until this point, our work has only been seen by our peers, course leaders and visiting industry lecturers so this will be fantastic to see how our work engages with a whole new audience" says 2nd year student, Lucy Bailey who is exhibiting her atmospheric landscapes of Britain.

"The course team encourage the students to work through the often painful process, involving false starts, exasperated tutorials,  moments of despair,  and the 'eureka' moments when all the work and pain pays off.  As tutors it is a big satisfaction to watch progress over a year, as ideas take root and grow into something that begins to excite the students, something unique to them" says Tony.

This popular course continues to be affiliated with the Association of Photographers, and is recognised by the British Institute of Professional Photographers.  The course also actively forges links with international photography institutions and professionals, a link the students are able to exploit through the many and varied field trips and professional lectures.

"The recent Photography Symposium celebrated the successful opening of our new Photography Centre and the strength of our photographic courses and graduates. It brought together some of the best contemporary photographers and photographic experts in the UK to share their expertise with students and staff at the College in an intensive and inspiring event" added Jeff Hellyer, Director of Art.

Due to the success of the BA(Hons) Photography course and unprecedented demand, new photography courses have been added to the available courses of study - BA(Hons) Press Photography, and BA(Hons) Marine & Natural History Photography are already attracting students from across the globe as well as industry professionals such as Johnny Kingdom; founding partner of Oxford Scientific Films, Peter Parks; and renowned photographers, Eamonn McCabe, Chrystel Lebas, Jane Brettle, Nigel Shafran, Paul Reas and Andy Earl, whose work spans the gamut of styles from landscape, fine art, fashion and music to documentary, press and editorial.

University College Falmouth's Photography courses are located in a brand new two-storey Photography Centre that has been designed following consultation with the industry. It includes hugely expanded digital and photographic facilities as well as specialist resources such as an electronic picture desk, all of which cements the College's position as one of the top providers of photographic education in the UK.

University College Falmouth is a founding partner in the Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC), a unique initiative to promote regional economic regeneration through Higher Education. The CUC is funded mainly by the European Union (Objective One), the South West Regional Development Agency, and the Higher Education Funding Council for England, with support from Cornwall County Council.
