News - Photography Symposium at Falmouth

University College Falmouth press release

Industry heavyweights recently flocked to University College Falmouth's brand new Photography Centre at its flagship campus at Tremough to share their experiences and knowledge of contemporary photography with current students.

Speakers included wildlife TV presenter, Johnny Kingdom; founding partner of Oxford Scientific Films, Peter Parks; and renowned photographers, Eamonn McCabe, Chrystel Lebas, Jane Brettle, Nigel Shafran, Paul Reas and Andy Earl, whose work spans the gamut of styles from landscape, fine art, fashion and music to documentary, press and editorial.  Brian Griffin, The Guardian's 1980's Photographer of the Decade was also in conversation with the former Senior Curator of Photographs at the Victoria and Albert Museum, Mark Haworth-Booth, and exhibited a retrospective of his work in the new Photography Gallery at the campus.

BA(Hons) Photography, MA Photography, BA(Hons) Press Photography, and BA(Hons) Marine & Natural History Photography all contributed to the four-day event, ensuring that a wide range of themes and practices were represented.

BA(Hons) Press Photography students, Tom Dymond, Oli Rudkin, Sam Camfield, Bex Austin, Mark Woods and Will Bunce, photographed all the speakers as a visual record of this year's event.

BA(Hons) Press Photography Course Leader, Mal Stone said:  "We were very lucky to have the eminent photographer, Eamonn McCabe, as a key speaker.  He has vast experience in the world of editorial photography both as a sports and portrait photographer and from his work as picture editor of The Guardian."

Director of Art, Jeff Hellyer added:  "The 2008 Photography Symposium celebrated the successful opening of our new Photography Centre and the strength of our photographic courses and graduates. It brought together some of the best contemporary photographers and photographic experts in the UK to share their expertise with students and staff at the College in an intensive and inspiring event."

Photography Lecturer, Steph Cosgrove commented:  "It was a great chance for students to hear and meet some of the eclectic mix of contemporary practitioners that they revere from a distance."

University College Falmouth's Photography courses are located in a brand new two-storey Photography Centre that has been designed following consultation with the industry. It includes hugely expanded digital and photographic facilities as well as specialist resources such as an electronic picture desk, all of which cements the College's position as one of the top providers of photographic education in the UK.

University College Falmouth is a founding partner in the Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC), a unique initiative to promote regional economic regeneration through Higher Education. The CUC is funded mainly by the European Union (Objective One), the South West Regional Development Agency, and the Higher Education Funding Council for England, with support from Cornwall County Council.
