University of Exeter press release

School children from across Cornwall will soon be experimenting with solar energy, learning how animals are adapting to climate change and venturing into a real mine. The University of Exeter is planning a packed programme of events to celebrate National Science and Engineering Week on its Tremough Campus, Penryn, on 12 and 14 March.

Over 50 children aged between 14 and 18 from eight schools across the county are booked to attend. The events will give pupils chance to use cutting-edge high definition surveying equipment, experiment with renewable energy and test their knowledge of animals in a zoological quiz. An event focusing on the science and engineering of mining will give students the opportunity to visit the University's amazing test mine. Pupils will also hear about the latest cutting-edge research, from genetics to evolution, that University of Exeter biologists are doing in Cornwall.

Professor Matthew Evans, Provost of the University of Exeter's Cornwall Campus said: "We are proud to have developed an international reputation for our expertise in science and engineering on the Tremough Campus. We have some of the world's leading experts on subjects ranging from mining engineering and renewable energy to evolutionary biology and conservation. We relish the chance to share some of our research with local school groups and also to show them the fantastic opportunities there are to study science and engineering in Cornwall."

National Science and Engineering Week is coordinated by the BA (British Association for the Advancement of Science) in partnership with the Engineering and Technology Board (ETB), and funded by the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS). Events will take place across the UK from 7 to 16 March 2008. An online programme of events can be found at http://www.the-ba.net/nsew

The £100 million Tremough campus is a Combined Universities in Cornwall initiative -of which the University of Exeter and University College Falmouth are two of the founding partners. It is funded mainly by the European Union (Objective One), the South West Regional Development Agency, and the Higher Education Funding Council for England, with support from Cornwall County Council. Set in 70 acres of countryside, but close to the waterside towns of Penryn and Falmouth, the campus offers a lively student community. The University of Exeter now offers degrees in Biology, Modern Celtic and Cornish Studies, English, Geology, Geography, History, Law, Mining Engineering, Politics and Renewable Energy on its Tremough Campus, which has expanded rapidly as part of the Combined Universities in Cornwall initiative.
