News - New Associate Researcher

University College Falmouth press release

Deborah Baker, Course Leader on the MA Photography course at University College Falmouth, has been invited to join the College's iRes (Interactive Art & Design) Research Cluster as an Associate Researcher.

An artist and photographer, Deborah graduated from Trent Polytechnic in Creative Photography and worked in New York for Ralph Gibson, Mary Ellen Mark, Langdon Clay and Robert Mapplethorpe.  She was also the first Director of Oriel Ffotographeg, now known as fFotoggallery in Cardiff, and is a Photographic Fellow of Sheffield City Polytechnic.

Using still photography and video cameras, Deborah produces images that explore the concepts of memory, time and space.  "By photographing the moment just before or after an event, I look for an awareness of meaning that is not necessarily described by the actual image, but suggested in a symbolic or metaphorical sense," she explained of her work.

In 1996, Deborah was appointed Senior Lecturer at Birmingham Institute of Art & Design where she taught on the MA and BA Visual Communication (Photography) and contributed through her practice to the research department of the faculty.  Deborah joined University College Falmouth in 2003 as a Senior Lecturer on the BA(Hons) Photography course and is currently joint Course Leader on the College's MA in Photography.
