News - UCAS Convention at Tremough

University of Exeter/University College Falmouth press release

88 UK universities are heading to the Tremough Campus, Penryn, on 18 March for the Cornwall UCAS Higher Education Convention. Exhibitors from as far away as Stirling, Cambridge and Liverpool, will join Cornwall's own universities and colleges to help local people make the right decision in choosing where to study.

Organised by Connexions Cornwall and Devon and the University of Exeter and University College Falmouth, which share the Tremough Campus, the event is expected to attract around 3000 Year 12 students from across Cornwall. They will have the chance to find out what universities from across the UK, including those in Cornwall, can offer them. They will also have the chance to attend seminars on individual subjects, from media to medicine, and on issues like student life, taking a gap year and student finance.

Professor Matthew Evans, Provost for the University of Exeter's Cornwall Campus, said: "We're delighted to be hosting this event with University College Falmouth and Connexions. We hope it will open students' eyes to the amazing opportunities that await them, whether they choose to move away to study or take advantage of the range of options now available closer to home."

University College Falmouth Principal, Professor Alan Livingston added:  "We look forward to welcoming the students of the future to the Tremough Campus, and to giving them a flavour of what Higher Education in the 21st Century can do for them in terms of preparing them for successful futures, whether here in Cornwall or further afield."

The Cornwall UCAS Higher Education Convention is organised by Connexions Cornwall and Devon and the University of Exeter and University College Falmouth in conjunction with UCAS and HELOA. Local exhibitors, which are all part of the Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC) initiative, are Cornwall College, Duchy College, the University of Exeter, University College Falmouth and the Peninsula Medical School.

Dr Ian Tunbridge OBE, Executive Director of the Combined Universities in Cornwall, said: "With a partnership of seven different universities and colleges working together in the county, Cornwall now offers an incredibly broad range of study opportunities. I hope that many of those who attend this event will be inspired to develop and apply their talents in the region."

The £100 million Tremough campus is a CUC initiative of which the University of Exeter and University College Falmouth are two of the founding partners.  The campus is shared and jointly managed by University College Falmouth and the University of Exeter in an arrangement that is unique in the UK.  It is funded mainly by the European Union (Objective One), the South West Regional Development Agency, and the Higher Education Funding Council for England, with support from Cornwall County Council. Set in 70 acres of countryside, but close to the waterside towns of Penryn and Falmouth, the campus offers a lively student community.
