News - Journalist Wins Bursary

Catherine Nicholson, an MA Broadcast Journalism student from University College Falmouth, has been selected from over 100 entrants to win one of three GCap Media bursaries.
GCap Media is the UK's largest commercial radio network, with over 70 stations employing more than 150 journalists. The scheme is for students of journalism courses that are accredited by the Broadcast Journalism Training Council and offers three bursaries of £1,500 towards fees and living expenses, plus a guaranteed work placement of up to six weeks.
"I had to submit an application form with information about my background and my career aspirations, as well as undertake some practical exercises," explained Catherine of the selection process. "I was very excited to hear that I'd been selected and am hoping to do my GCap work placement at the GWR newsroom in Bristol," she added. "The course at Falmouth gives you a brilliant opportunity to experience the roles of news producer, reporter and technical operator as well as develop skills in news gathering, script writing, recording and editing so you get a really good overview of how the broadcast journalism industry works. I'm hoping to work in straight news for at least a few years to really get my news writing and research skills honed before I think about doing anything else, but eventually, I hope to get into the documentary/programme-making side of things."
