News - Live the Life Competition

University College Falmouth press release

Bloc-online, a website for writers and writing edited by MA Professional Writing Students at University College Falmouth, has re-launched with a fresh design and an unusual new non-fiction competition.

To enter the 'Live the Life' competition, writers are asked to submit a piece of narrative non-fiction based on first-hand research.  Entries should be 750 words or less and should be accompanied by a 50-word explanation of when, where and how the research was carried out.  The deadline for entries is 29 April.

The winner will receive a signed copy of award-winning travel writer and novelist, Philip Marsden's The Barefoot Emperor donated by the Falmouth Bookseller; a copy of Louise Doughty's A Novel in a Year: A Novelist's Guide to being a Novelist courtesy of John Wiley and Sons; and a comprehensive set of books about writing donated by Waterstone's in Truro.

Themed around the idea of conflict, the new edition of bloc-online also features a range of original fiction and non-fiction as well as practical tips on how to use conflict in your writing.  And - as always - the editorial team pick the brains of authors, journalists and other industry insiders for advice on making a successful career as a writer.

Among the featured new fiction is the winner of the website's last competition, which saw writers competing to win a Sony Vaio laptop by submitting short stories incorporating a piece of text contributed by best-selling novelist Patrick Gale.  The winner was Dina Lynskey, with a story exploring the childhood origins of one woman's visceral reaction to animals.  Dina says she is delighted with her new laptop and the encouragement bloc-online has given her: "It was an unexpected surprise and has certainly given me the motivation to keep on writing."

The College's MA in Professional Writing is a one-year, intensive course that allows students to explore a variety of specialist options including fiction, creative non-fiction, features journalism, writing creatively for business and TV scriptwriting.  Graduates of the course are working in a wide range of writing and editorial roles across the media industry.
