News - Silversmithing and Jewellery Students Branch Out

Truro College press release

Silversmithing and Jewellery degree students are now completing their three years at Truro College with plans for business.

Barbara Morgan already has started a business called "By Design" a gallery in Newquay that is showcasing graduate work testing the market on their behalf.  Her own silver jewellery will also be on sale.  Colleague Dee Frost also has a gallery "The Silverworkz" in Fore Street, Hayle with a focus on jewellery and metal based work.

Other students include Karla Riekstins who specialises in working with silver and leather and Julia Hunter whose work is silver and ceramic based.  Both students are part of a co-operative group called "Ladysmithz" which is being set up by the students to produce their own work but exhibit together.

Julia Hunter explained:
"We all get on well together and offer support both emotionally and as designers.  Our work is completely different but has a common base."

Karla Riekstins added:
"We are all from the local area but there are students in the first and second years that are from further afield.  Some have transferred from other institutions to come to Truro College because our course puts the emphasis on design and making from scratch and its hands on straight away."

The course is validated by the University of Plymouth and this is the first year the whole degree programme has been completed.  The course is unique to Cornwall and aimed at students who wish to focus on both the vocational and the cultivation of an individual interpretation of personal craft practice.  If you would like to find out more about the BA (Hons) Silversmithing and Jewellery course or student work  students will be at the Hidden Art Cornwall Design Fair 2008 August bank holiday weekend or call 01872 267122.
