News - Free Surveying Event

University of Exeter press release

Uncovering the mysteries of ancient monuments, investigating a huge mine for potential hazards, finding the fault in a cliff face. From delving into the past to predicting the future, advanced surveying can do amazing things. Now, the University of Exeter is offering Cornwall's businesses the opportunity to find out what it could do for them.

A free one-day event on the University's Tremough Campus, Penryn, on Monday 7 July will provide an opportunity for individuals and companies involved in the surveying industry to learn more about the technology now available.

Advanced surveying is used in a broad range of industries, from construction to quarrying and from architecture to archaeology. Technology is developing quickly to respond to ever-growing need for fast and accurate information on the properties of a site. Through demonstrations and discussions, this event will explore the latest developments in the sector and reveal the expert advice and equipment available on the Tremough Campus.

Andy Wetherelt of the University of Exeter's Camborne School of Mines said: "From capturing architectural details of Cornwall's heritage sites to remotely surveying the internal structure of a mine, we have been using advanced surveying for a whole range of things. We hope that this event will inspire local companies as to what opportunities could result from the expertise and equipment that we have here on the Tremough Campus."

Sessions include a presentation on advanced surveying in archaeology and architecture, a session on assessing slope and rock face stability and a demonstration of the University's new laser scanner.

The Tremough Campus is funded mainly by the European Union (Objective One), the South West Regional Development Agency, and the Higher Education Funding Council for England, with support from Cornwall County Council. Set in 70 acres of countryside, but close to the waterside towns of Penryn and Falmouth, the campus offers a lively student community. The University of Exeter now offers degrees in Biology, Modern Celtic and Cornish Studies, English, Geology, Geography, History, Law, Mining Engineering, Politics and Renewable Energy on the Tremough Campus, which has expanded rapidly as part of the Combined Universities in Cornwall initiative.
