News - Free Tremough Event

University of Exeter press release

Local people can gain an insight into the fascinating world of mammal societies at a free evening event on the Tremough Campus, Penryn, on Thursday 16 October.

The University of Exeter has invited Professor Tim Clutton-Brock to share his extensive knowledge and passion for studying mammals at this lecture, which is open to all. Tim Clutton-Brock is the University of Cambridge Prince Philip Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. He has featured on recent BBC Springwatch and Autumnwatch programmes and his meerkat study provides the basis for the BBC's popular Meerkat Manor series.

His research has investigated the evolution of reproductive strategies, breeding systems and societies, the operation of natural and sexual selection and the regulation of animal populations. He has worked primarily with mammals and has initiated a number of well-known, long-term studies that have been able to follow large samples of individuals throughout their lifespans, including studies of red deer, Soay sheep and meerkats. His studies have taken him from the Isle of Rum to the Kalahari.

Professor Matthew Evans, Provost of the University of Exeter's Cornwall Campus (Tremough) said: "This promises to be a fascinating evening and we hope that local people will take the opportunity to come to the Campus and hear Tim speak. Our Centre for Ecology and Conservation is the fastest growing institute of its kind in the world and is enabling us to develop links with some of the world's top scientists. Thanks to these connections, we can bring people like Tim to Cornwall to share his knowledge and enthusiasm not only with academics but with the local community."

This event takes place at 5.45pm for a 6.15pm start on Thursday 16 October on the University of Exeter's Tremough Campus, Penryn.

The event is free, but places must be booked and will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. To reserve a ticket, please contact:

The £100 million Tremough Campus is a Combined Universities in Cornwall initiative -of which the University of Exeter and University College Falmouth are two of the founding partners. It is funded mainly by the European Union (Objective One), the South West Regional Development Agency, and the Higher Education Funding Council for England, with support from Cornwall County Council. Set in 70 acres of countryside, but close to the waterside towns of Penryn and Falmouth, the campus offers a lively student community. The University of Exeter now offers degrees in Biology, Modern Celtic and Cornish Studies, English, Geology, Geography, History, Law, Mining Engineering, Politics and Renewable Energy on the Tremough Campus, which has expanded rapidly as part of the Combined Universities in Cornwall initiative.
