News - marine school successful research day

Falmouth Marine School press release

First year Foundation Degree students at Falmouth Marine School organised and ran a successful all-day event at the National Maritime Museum for over 80 guests.

The Falmouth Marine School Research Day was organised by the first year FdSc students to showcase the final projects of the second year FdSc students. The students organised the entire day as part of their Professional Development module and were responsible for everything from sending out invitations, designing programmes, posters and other publicity materials to running the event on the day.

The day began with a series of talks on a variety of research projects carried out by both marine experts and students and staff of the Marine School. Guest lecturers included, Simon Hammond, World Kayak Champion 2003-2005 of Shoreline Outdoor Pursuits who gave a riveting talk on 'The Strange process of Becoming a World Champion'; Matt Slater, Aquarium Curator, Blue Reef Aquarium, Newquay who talked about research projects carried out at Blue Reef Aquarium; and Mash Derrick, Boat Designer and former FdSc Boat Design & Production student who talked on 'Rapid Prototyping in the Marine Industry'.

Student research projects ranged from looking into Carbon Footprints in the Surfing Industry, the Habitat and Survival of the Blue Shark to a Concept Design for a Cruising Catamaran. The day was opened by John Slaughter, Falmouth Marine School Council Member, and speakers were introduced by first year students. After the presentations the second year students had a chance to display their research projects in the learning centre at the museum to staff, students and the general public.

Marine Environmental Management student Simon Pattenden said, "The day is geared towards the promotion of second year talent and this year we had a great deal of it. As first year students, we watch the progress of second years closely and the 2007 graduates have been great role models."

Tricia Noble, Senior Tutor, Falmouth Marine School said: "For the first time the day was organised by first year FdSc students as part of their professional development module so we were very pleased that the day was a great success and the comments from the guests were extremely complimentary. The presentations and the poster displays proved an excellent showcase for Falmouth Marine School HE students.  Also for the first time we were delighted to have some inspiring guest speakers from local marine related industries who gave the day that extra dimension."

John Latham, Principal of Cornwall College said: "The Research Day was an interesting and extremely well run event. It is a credit to the first year students for organising such a successful event with so many attendees as well as to the second years for presenting such interesting and informative projects."
