Falmouth Marine School press release

One of the first students to graduate from the Boat Design and Production Foundation Degree course at Falmouth Marine School is now working for local boatyard. Mash Derrick who was on the first year of the two year course now works for Cockwells in Falmouth.

Mash, who already had a degree in horticulture, moved to Falmouth in 2004 for a change of career, leaving a successful business in Bristol. After completing the courses Mash had the option of going on to the University of Plymouth to gain a full BSc, but as he already had a degree and had gained a good amount of experience in the marine industry, he decided to leave with an FdSc.

Mash managed to find a work placement with Cockwells during the first summer of his course, designing the conceptual interior of the Bristol Channel Pilot cutter as well as their stand at the Southampton Boat Show. He continued working for the boatyard for one day a week during his second year, helping design (styling and overall appearance) the new build St Mawes ferry.

Mash's final project on the course won the 2006 RINA - Pendennis Student Naval Architect Award and after graduating he was offered a full time position at Cockwells. Mash specialises in 3D modelling and digital rendering which enables Cockwells to bring their clients wishes into virtual reality.

Mash said of his time at Falmouth Marine School: "It was great being at the School.
The course, as well as providing me with a great foundation for the career I am now embarking upon, provided me with a great resource as I now live and work in Falmouth. Although in the second year, it was sometimes hard balancing studying with working one day a week, I did really enjoy it and it was great to have a source of income as well. It was a lot of hard work but definitely worth it!"

John Latham, Principal of Cornwall College said:  "This is great news for Mash; all of our Foundation Degrees are developed with industry, to ensure that our students have the knowledge and skills that the Marine industry needs."
