News - new he courses for cornwall

Combined Universities in Cornwall press release

Law, Cruise Ship Operations and Fashion Design are among the many new degree courses starting in Cornwall this year, thanks to the success of the Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC) partnership.

Many of the courses welcoming their first students this September will be housed in the new higher education buildings created at university and college campuses across Cornwall as part of the £55 million second phase of the CUC initiative, which received investment from Objective One and the UK Government.

University College Falmouth has announced a raft of new degree courses for September 2007, including Digital Animation, Fashion Design, Performance Sportswear Design, Public Relations and two new Photography courses. The College shares the Tremough campus in Penryn with the University of Exeter, which will be adding degrees in Cornish Studies, History, Law and Politics.

The range of vocationally focused Foundation degrees is also expanding. Truro College is now offering Music Performance, Biomedical Studies and Hairdressing and Salon Management as well as Silversmithing and Jewellery, Archaeology and Sports Performance and Coaching Honours degree programmes. These courses will be based in the College's new Fal building, which provides an iconic focus for its university-level programmes.

Cornwall College is also offering new courses from September in Integrated Environmental Management, Cruise Ship Operations and Live Arts Performance at its Camborne and St. Austell campuses, both of which also boast new higher education facilities.

Further Foundation degrees in Media Writing and Visual Culture will be available along with Rescue & Emergency Management, based at the site at Lusty Glaze in Newquay. Cornwall College also has three new University of Plymouth Honours degree courses which have been approved in Sports Performance and Coaching, Horticulture and Rural Business Management.

The Foundation degrees and the new 'top-up' Honours degrees offered at Cornwall, Truro and Penwith Colleges are awarded by the University of Plymouth through the University of Plymouth Colleges Faculty (UPC).

Dr Ian Tunbridge, Executive Director of CUC is encouraged by these latest developments, commenting, "These latest additions to Cornwall's university level offering show just how powerful the new model of higher education that CUC is pioneering truly is. The nine different universities and colleges working together in the county are uniquely able to deliver a broad range of courses which meet the needs of different types of learners and which produce graduates with the diverse specialist skills Cornwall's businesses need for their future success."
