News - First Step for First Class Graduate

Combined Universities in Cornwall press release

Coastline Services in Camborne were so impressed with top Cornwall College student Lucy Cox that they recently recruited her as Marketing Manager even before she had received the results of the degree in Business Administration which she had taken at the Camborne campus.  Lucy was lucky enough to find the graduate level opportunity through Combined Universities in Cornwall's placement scheme, Unlocking Cornish Potential, which places graduates in Cornish companies to help them develop.

Coastline Services is a subsidiary company of Coastline Housing Ltd, a non-profit making charitable trust which is a major provider of affordable housing in West Cornwall.  Coastline Services provides all-round building and grounds solutions to a wide range of private and public sector clients.

The company approached Unlocking Cornish Potential, which is managed by Cornwall College and supported by Objective One, looking for a graduate who could become the Marketing Manager for Coastline Services and develop a formal marketing plan.

Lucy was selected through a rigorous interview process for this new role and is thoroughly enjoying the challenge, commenting: "It was great not to only to be able to study and complete my Business degree in Cornwall, but also to be able to put my new skills back into a local organisation. I love Cornwall and felt passionately about remaining in the County - thanks to UCP this has been possible! The teams at Coastline Services and UCP are giving me plenty of support and I look forward to delivering tangible results throughout the course of the project."

Lucy has since learned that she has gained a First Class Honours degree after completing her studies in June. The BA (Hons) Business Administration course run at Cornwall College is awarded by the University of Plymouth, a partner in Combined Universities in Cornwall.

Not only has Coastline found a talented graduate through UCP but they also have the support of the project team, an expert mentor and help to access training.  The company has been so impressed by the project that they have recruited a second graduate to join Coastline Housing on a neighbourhood development project.

Zoe Dickman, Human Resources Advisor at Coastline comments, "We are proud to be part of an initiative that helps nurture local talent and ensures that it is not lost to our community. Lucy has already proved herself to be a great asset to our company and is living proof that local graduates don't have to leave Cornwall to pursue an exciting career."

Cornwall College is holding an open day on all its campus sites on Saturday 6th October, where you can find out about the business degree that Lucy's completed and over 100 other degree-level courses. For details or to book your place, mailto:he.admissions@cornwall.ac.uk or call 01209 617698.
