News - New Public Relations Award

University College Falmouth press release

PR-savvy sixth formers now have the opportunity to position themselves in the media spotlight as University College Falmouth launches the UK's first PR award for students at school or college.

In addition to national recognition for being the UK's best school-age PR practitioner, the winner will receive an Apple iBook computer and qualify for a contribution of £500 towards the fee for enrolling on University College Falmouth's new Public Relations degree course.

"We know that students throughout the country are engaging in PR and promotions, perhaps without realising the value of this activity in terms of future study or employment," explained Course Leader for Falmouth's new BA(Hons) in Public Relations, Jon Cope.  "This new award aims to recognise the country's brightest young talent and hopes to encourage further study at degree level in this strategically important and dynamic discipline."

The competition is open to any Year 12 or 13 student who is studying at school or further education college at the time of the competition launch (25 September).

Entry is simple: a 1,000-word submission on either:

  • a PR or publicity campaign the student has run in the past
  • a PR or publicity campaign the student is currently running   (or plans to run) or
  • an imaginary PR or publicity campaign the student would like to run.

Ashley PR partner and Chair of Examiners of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations, Sue Wolstenholme, added:  "With the vast majority of PR awards recognizing talent already working within the industry, it's great to see University College Falmouth encouraging more interest in the field at a stage when students are making higher education choices that will affect their future career paths."

University College Falmouth is a founding partner in the Combined Universities in Cornwall, a unique initiative to promote regional economic regeneration through higher education.  The CUC is funded mainly by the European Union (Objective One), the South West Regional Development Agency, and the Higher Education Funding Council for England, with support from Cornwall County Council.
