News - Free History for All

University of Exeter press release

Three major historians will be challenging the standard interpretation of major events in history; in a series of free public lectures at the University of Exeter's Tremough Campus, Penryn.   These open autumn lectures will challenge general views of Russia, international diplomacy and the Treaty of Versailles.

Dr Kristofer Allerfeldt, organiser and University of Exeter lecturer in History believes that; "Everyone in Cornwall with an interest in understanding history, from A level students to pensioners, will, I am certain, benefit from hearing alternative views on dramatic events in history that may not be found in standard text books."

Journalist, broadcaster, historian and novelist, Lesley Chamberlain, will kick start the free lectures on the 15 October by exploring the unique position of Russia as both an Asiatic and European power and the remarkable impact Russia's distinctive identity has had on the world we live in.

On the 12 November, Professor Margaret MacMillan, (St Anthony's College, Oxford) a leading historian of 20th century diplomatic history; will examine the relationship of 'Nixon & Mao - The Birth of the 21st Century' to illustrate the complexity of international diplomacy.

The final public lecture on 10 December will be given by the ever colourful Professor Alan Sharp of the University of Ulster.  He will highlight the background and trade offs in the Treaty of Versailles and challenge the views of those who saw the Treaty as the cause of the rise of Hitler and World War Two and those who saw it as a solution to the wounds left by World War One.

Registration is essential as spaces are limited, contact 01326 371817 or email j.m.pengelly@exeter.ac.uk for further information or directions. For more information about the university

It is funded mainly by the European Union (Objective One), the South West Regional Development Agency, and the Higher Education Funding Council for England, with support from Cornwall County Council. Set in 70 acres of countryside, but close to the waterside towns of Penryn and Falmouth, the campus offers a lively student community. The University of Exeter now offers degrees in Biology, Cornish Studies, English, Geology, Geography, History, Law, Mining Engineering, Politics and Renewable Energy on its Tremough Campus, which has expanded rapidly as part of the Combined Universities in Cornwall initiative.
