News - RINA Student Naval Architect Award

Falmouth Marine School press release

The 2007 RINA Student Naval Architect Award this year was given to Sam Frankland-James for his final project on the Boat Design and Production Foundation Degree at Falmouth Marine School. Sam who completed the course in July 2007 is currently working for A2 Rigging, a local yacht and architectural rigging company.

The RINA Student Naval Architect Award is presented to students studying naval architecture or related subjects who achieve the best results in their final year projects or exams. Many of these Awards are co-sponsored by industry. The Falmouth Marine School Award is sponsored by Pendennis Shipyard and awarded each year to a student on the Boat Design and Production Foundation Degree.

The award is presented at universities across the globe as far as Myanmar, China and New Zealand. Falmouth Marine School is among a host of UK universities including University College London and Southampton University who qualifies for this award.

Sam's final project was a concept design for a performance cruising catamaran. He analysed ratios and design characteristics along a design continuum of performance to cruising. Through a parametric study a first iteration of a design solution was created to meet a theoretical client brief.

The Royal Institution of Naval Architects is an internationally renowned professional institution whose members are involved at all levels in the design, construction, maintenance and operation of marine vessels and structures. Members of the RINA are widely represented in industry, universities and colleges, and maritime organisations in over 90 countries.

Alex Whatley, Course Manager, Boat Design & Production Foundation Degree said: "The Boat Design & Production course is an ideal introduction to the world of small craft naval architecture. Sam's project was an excellent investigation into the design parameters of offshore catamarans and the optimisation of these parameters to a given design brief."

Sam said, "The RINA award is very encouraging and one day soon my design will be built! Many thanks to Pendennis for the tour of their facilities and to Mike Carr for his time. I really enjoyed my time at Falmouth Marine School and learnt a lot about boats, many thanks to all the lecturers."

Mike Carr Joint MD at Pendennis commented "Boat building and naval architecture are great areas to be studying in at the moment. We have seen our business in the superyacht arena flourishing over the past decade and the growth in the market show's no sign of abating. As a business we are always looking for talented, hard working and enthusiastic graduates and would encourage anyone to contact us."

John Latham, Principal of Cornwall College comments: "Congratulations to Sam for producing such an excellent final project. These awards not only encourage students to do better but also create long standing and mutual beneficial relationships with local industries."
