Students Reach National Finals

A team of four local animation students from Cornwall College are finalists in a national animation competition sponsored by Killing Cancer.

The competition was organised to raise awareness about a new cancer treatment called Photodynamic Therapy or PDT. The brief required students to produce a two-minute animation to accompany the single 'Photo Dynamic Therapy' produced by Huw Lloyd-Langton from Hawkwind, who has himself benefited from the treatment, and his wife Marion, for the Killing Cancer charity.

Twenty-six universities and colleges registered for the competition with 360 students working on the project.

Stephen Howard, programme manager on the Animation Foundation Degree at Cornwall College Camborne said: "It was a tough brief and pure dedication from these students is what has got them through to this stage."

Roxanne Barber, 19, from Camborne, is one of the finalists.  She said, "I'm really pleased that we have got this far in the 'Killing Cancer' competition and proud that I've done my bit for such a great cause."

James Yeo, 21, from Exeter, added: "I'm chuffed at what the team have accomplished. It's not every day you get to this stage in a competition to raise awareness for a groundbreaking cancer treatment like PDT. Having the opportunity to work to a real brief using the skills we have acquired at the College gave us a good experience of working to deadlines under pressure."

Unfortunately the team were pipped to the post by another university, but as finalists, Jonathon Rudd from Penzance, James Yeo from Exeter, Eleanor Adkinson from Pothtowan and Roxanne Barber from Camborne, will each receive the Adobe editing software worth £1,000.

In addition to this great prize their animation will be included on a DVD that will be included with Huw Lloyd-Langton's new album, 'Hard Graft', as well as showcased on a dedicated website for the release of the album.

Dave Linnell OBE, Principal of Cornwall College, said: "It's great that our students have been able to be involved in a real brief like this, especially for such a good cause. The animation they have produced is exceptionally good and truly worthy of recognition."

The Animation Foundation Degree at the College covers 3D animation, stop-motion, model-making, interactive media and digital video. All undergraduate courses at Cornwall College are approved by the University of Plymouth.
