Students Better than World Average

Cornwall College press release

Cornwall College Camborne students studying to become Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) are celebrating after achieving higher than not only the UK average but also the worldwide average in their latest exams.

Accountancy students on the NVQ 4 course received fantastic results for their last two modules; 91 per cent of students passed their planning and controlling resources unit compared with a worldwide average of only 79 per cent (UK 84 per cent) and 96 per cent passed their personal tax unit compared to the worldwide average of 91 per cent (UK 91 per cent).

Student, Tina Medlyn, from Camborne, said: "I'm really pleased with my results, it's been tough but the teaching is outstanding and I'm really enjoying the course."

The students will take their final exams in June and then become a member of the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT). Many choose to progress onto the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) qualification.

Louise McDonald, from Camborne, said: "The course is becoming more demanding now but once you pass the exams all the work pays off and it's a really rewarding feeling. I plan to study towards the ACCA qualification when I finish and I feel that this course is going to help me achieve my future career goals."

"I am self employed so studying this course is really helping me further my business prospects. I feel I'm on track for finishing in June and think it's great that I can qualify as an AAT and work in the industry for a few years before moving my career on with the ACCA qualification. And I can do it all on my doorstep!" added Sarah Nation, from Redruth.

Course Manager, Russell Searle, said: "We have approximately 200 students studying accountancy at Camborne attending either the day or evening courses. The majority of the teaching team is made up of chartered accountants, delivering an excellent standard of lecturing and training to our students.

"We are in a unique position in Cornwall as we offer both the AAT and the ACCA qualification and are the only college in the county to do so. These professional qualifications really help the learners excel in their field and many of these AAT students intend to further their study with the ACCA qualification," added Russell.

Dave Linnell OBE, Principal of Cornwall College, said: "I would like to congratulate all the students and the staff for their hard work and dedication; results like these are definitely worth celebrating. These courses are extremely popular and we are lucky to have experienced staff who are very supportive in helping learners achieve the best they possibly can."
