Local Chefs Prepare
Cornwall College press release
The cream of local chefs are preparing for this year's 'Cornish Challenge', a culinary competition celebrating the quality and diversity of Cornish produce organised by Cornwall Catering Excellence.
The competition takes place on Monday 8th February at Cornwall College Camborne and its aim is to raise the threshold of culinary standards and promote the use of Cornish ingredients. The competition is all about the total dining experience and each team will also be judged on their front of house skills. Teams are made up of four chefs and two front-of-house staff, Hospitality and Catering students from Cornwall College will also be assigned to each team to help assist in the kitchen and with waiting on tables.
Don McKenzie, Head of Faculty for Retail and Service Industries said: "Students get brilliant experience with their involvement in this; it's a very professional competition which gives them a perfect insight into the working world and how they can cope under pressure!
"Our facilities here at Cornwall College are state-of-the-art and it's a real honour to hold events like these and have the best local chefs showcasing their talents in our training kitchens."
Although the students are not part of the competition each team will nominate a student who has shown particular skills and enthusiasm, the people competing are potential employers so this is a real chance for learners to shine, develop their knowledge and demonstrate their capabilities.
Dave Linnell OBE, Principal of Cornwall College, said: "At Cornwall College we feel it's important for our students to have the chance to face as many different experiences as possible. Working with professionals in events like this proves to our students what they can achieve through hard work and dedication."
Winning competition dishes exquisitely prepared by the Watergate Bay team last year included 'Pot Roast Fillet & Slow Cooked Shin of Beef' and mouth watering 'Cornish Wildflower Honey & White Chocolate Delice with Chocolate Sauce'. Let the battle commence...
