Food Students Visit Local Businesses

First year Food Studies students at Duchy College have been visiting local food suppliers to gain valuable knowledge and establish good working relationships for their future careers.

The Food Studies Foundation Degree course at Duchy College offers a very practical approach to gaining a qualification and as part of the course students are required to undertake work placements, visit local businesses and develop good working relationships, giving them valuable hands-on experience in the sector before graduating.

Visits to local businesses within the food industry this year have included Crellow Foods in Tregony, Burts Chips in Plymouth, Tulip Foods in Bodmin, Paramount 21 in Newton Abbot and W C Rowes Bakery across the region.

Liz Whitley, Curriculum Area Manager for Food, said: "The College prides itself on its links with industry; it therefore tries to ensure that students get as much interaction with external businesses as possible. I would like to thank the local companies which we have visited for their hospitality."

Dave Linnell OBE, Principal of Cornwall College of which Duchy College is part, said: "We aim to encourage students to go out into industry and see firsthand how the food industry works as we believe this is integral preparation for life after college."
