Combined Universities in Cornwall Environmental Research Forum and the European Centre for Environment & Human Health present:-

Environmental Research, Business and Innovation
in South West England

16-17th September, 2010

Tremough Campus, Penryn, Cornwall

Inaugural Meeting and Call for Papers

South-West England offers some unique opportunities for Environmental Research and Enterprise. These include the benefits of coastal and rural living on human health, the use of renewable energy, and the mining heritage and mineralogy of the South West that has provided a unique insight into the long term
adaptations of organisms to trace metals.

In addition, the locations and types of agriculture are important to
practical research into sustainable food supply and the rural economy. The region hosts a myriad of greentechnologies for renewable energy, marine industries, and companies with emerging technologies.

The purpose of this meeting is to bring together the scientific experts from academia, government and industry with small businesses, regional development agencies, and professionals interested in socio-economic aspects of the region. Researchers from the international community who already work in the SW or
would like to learn more about the research opportunities are most welcome to attend.

This meeting will be of interest to Environmental Scientists, Ecotoxicologists, Biologists, Public Health Professionals, Social
Scientists, Economists, NGOs, Local Government departments with responsibility for the environment and/or health and safety, Businesses, Regulators, and Policy Makers. Delegates from small businesses/new companies on environmental issues are especially welcome.

The forum is also keen to promote the training and professional development in all these activities, as well as innovative ways of engaging the public in science and technology through the arts or the use of novel information technology.

There will also be presentations on funding opportunities for research and innovation in the region, and on UK/European funding initiatives such as the European Social Fund. Oral presentations and posters are invited on the
broad themes above including:-

. Coastal ecosystems, marine biology, human health in the coastal zone.
. Health and life style in the South West, socio-economic impacts.
. Conservation and Ecology.
. Land use, sustainable agriculture, and food.
. Occupational health in outdoor environments.
. Soil, water and air pollution.
. Contaminants of regional concern (e.g., arsenic, metals, pesticides, radiation exposure).
. The South West as a model location for international research and innovation.
. Environmental technologies and commercial opportunities in the South West.
. Environmental and Human Health risk assessment.
. Climate change, sustainability and the regional green economy.
. Emerging issues, novel technologies, novel materials.
