Tremough Hosts Animal Behaviour Conference

University of Exeter press release

A biologist from the University of Exeter's Tremough Campus, Penryn, is hosting an international animal behaviour conference in London.

Dr Sasha Dall is organising this year's Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour winter meeting, which is held at the Zoological Society of London on 3 and 4 December. 200 biologists from countries including the USA, Germany, Italy and Canada are expected to attend, along with UK scientists including a team from the University of Exeter's Tremough Campus.

Research from Dr Dall and his team on the foraging behaviour of meerkats and on personality and life-history strategies in pea aphids will be presented. Tremough academic Dr Stuart Bearhop will present his research on new chemical techniques for measuring foraging specialisations and PhD student Andrew Robertson will share his research on the foraging behaviour in badgers.

The theme of the conference is 'individual specialisation' and presentations will range in subject from foraging to parenting to the spread of disease.

Dr Sasha Dall said: "I am excited to have the opportunity to organise such an important event and am looking forward to hearing about the latest research from other scientists from around the world. The Centre for Ecology and Conservation, based at Tremough, is fast developing a reputation for being world-leading in its field. Events like this are a great way of highlighting what we are doing down in Cornwall."

The £100 million Tremough Campus is a Combined Universities in Cornwall initiative Ĵof which the University of Exeter and University College Falmouth are two of the founding partners. It is funded mainly by the European Union (Objective One), the South West Regional Development Agency, and the Higher Education Funding Council for England, with support from Cornwall County Council. Set in 70 acres of countryside, but close to the waterside towns of Penryn and Falmouth, the campus offers a lively student community. The University of Exeter now offers degrees in Biology, Modern Celtic and Cornish Studies, English, Geology, Geography, History, Law, Mining Engineering, Politics and Renewable Energy on its Tremough Campus, which has expanded rapidly as part of the Combined Universities in Cornwall initiative.
