From Best Supporting Actress nominations, working with international charities and winning prestigious national awards to visiting international festivals and publishing new anthologies of poems and cinematic magazines, the students and staff of the School of Media at University College Falmouth continue to excel.
BA(Hons) Film graduates have hit the ground running with Joanna Beard nominated for Best Supporting Actress in Resolve, a film by fellow graduate, Ed Fargher at the 3rd Tenerife International Film Festival and Simon Walsh signing an option agreement for his screenplay, Sweet Dreams, whilst Fern Berresford has been working with Christian Aid and Ctrl.Alt.Shift., a new youth brand of the international development organisation, after being declared one of six winners of Christian Aid's national young filmmakers competition. Laura Prudom also scooped the first prize in the first job competition in the United States and Jack Bridger has been awarded a much sought-after and highly competitive Art and Humanities Research Council Master's Award to undertake his MA at Manchester University.
Meanwhile, BA(Hons) Film lecturer, Kingsley Marshall, delivered a paper at the Richard Nixon and the Making of Modern America conference, at the Rothermere Institute, University of Oxford and is writing a chapter in an edited collection called The President At The Movies, due for publication by Palgrave in 2010.
The course recently hosted the first symposium organised through regional moving image network, Screen Studies South West, showcasing new research by emerging scholars from all over the West Country, covering the many and varied aspects of film, television and new media.
Recent BA(Hons) English with Creative Writing graduate, Megan Crump wrote herself into the history books this year as the first student from Cornwall to make it all the way to the finals of the National Shell Step Most Enterprising Student Awards as a result of her work placement at Spectrum, a service provider for people with Autistic Spectrum Disorders. Megan's project was to increase the awareness of Spectrum's services, raise the profile of the charity, create branded marketing material and to find ways to promote and source funds for a major fundraising activity.
Colleagues from BA(Hons) English with Creative Writing and BA(Hons) English with Media Studies have also enhanced UCF's reputation across the region with Dr Kim Martindale representing UCF at the Writing South West Symposium, a collaborative project with universities in the South West to create a network of academics who may also work as creative writers and has been appointed to the awarding panel of the Boardman Tasker Prize for Mountain Literature 2009.
Fellow lecturer, Rupert Loydell has edited a new anthology of poems, Troubles Swapped for Something Fresh, and will publish a new book of his own poems entitled BoomBox at the end of this summer.
BA(Hons) Broadcasting graduate, Matthew Rogers is the Station Manager of the new local radio station, Source 96.1FM, broadcasting live from the Tremough Campus. Staffed by volunteers and providing more than 81 hours of community radio, the support and training of presenters and producers has been supplied by current students on the BA(Hons) Broadcasting course whilst gaining invaluable on-air experience themselves.
BA(Hons) Journalism students have been leading the way across the globe with the launch of Crossfire Media Ltd, a student project set up in 2008 to promote new talent in the media and the arts in post conflict countries by final-year student, Chris Green. Other recent graduates have also worked on The Telegraph, BBC magazines (Olive, BBC Wildlife), You magazine and BBC Radio Cornwall, as well as local and regional papers. Two students worked on BBC magazines in Mumbai, as well as on magazines and newspapers, and for PR companies in Norway and Singapore.
Pioneering photography students have successfully extended the boundaries of their global reach through international collaborations, initiatives, competitions and exchanges.
Co-Course Leader of BA(Hons) Photography, Tony Clancy, along with BA(Hons) Photography student, Clare Trotter and BA(Hons) Press & Editorial Photography student, Oliver Knoop visited the Chobi Mela Photography Festival and the Pathsala Photography College in Bangladesh earlier this year to take part in the festival's workshops, talks and exhibitions and to begin to develop opportunities for students at Falmouth and in Bangladesh.
Another recent BA(Hons) Photography graduate, Jenny Brough, gained two honourable mentions in the non professional flower and non professional collage categories in this year's International Photography Awards competing against 22,000 entrants from 24 countries and was the only UK entrant in the collage category to achieve recognition in this prestigious awards scheme.
Closer to home, first-year BA(Hons) Photography students researched and photographed the social histories of Falmouth, Penryn and Flushing culminating in a book being published, entitled Audience in the Community.
BA(Hons) Press & Editorial Photography students have continued to impress the industry this year with their professionalism, knowledge and skills which led to the renowned photographic press agency, Rex Features, offering two students the opportunity to join them at their London office to gain experience of working on their busy international picture desk.
BA(Hons) Marine & Natural History photographer and adventurer, Martin Holland, is currently trekking across the largest ice-cap on mainland Europe to help monitor the effects of climate change and document the expedition whilst fellow student, Nicola Symberlist, was shortlisted for the Google Photography Prize, with judges acknowledging her creativity and interpretation of the iGoogle format.
Other BA(Hons) Marine & Natural History Photography students have travelled to the four corners of the world through work placements with BBC Wildlife magazine and self-funded projects to the Virgin Islands to research the variety of species around the reefs, to Finland to research and document the brown bear population and a variety of other research projects across the UK in collaboration with Geoparks and the Sharpham Estate in Devon.
BA(Hons) Digital Animation exchange student, Karolina Glusiec from Poland scooped two top awards at the prestigious Off Jak Goraco Independent Film Festival in Lodz, Poland, the second prize at Animation Exeter 2009 and was shortlisted for a Royal Television Society Student Television Awards(RTS) for her short animated film, Carousel Rodeo, following her success in the regional heat.
BA(Hons) Digital Animation Course Leader, and leading UK animator, Andy Wyatt has also played a starring role in the creation of CBBC's latest animation series, OOglies, as Animation Supervisor. Everyday objects from a lonely brussels sprout who just wants to make friends to a trio of motorbike-riding stunt eggs are brought to life, to have fun, misbehave and communicate with their googly eyes can be enjoyed each weekday at 5.45pm on the CBBC channel for the next few weeks.

There is a limited number of places available on UCF's degree courses in Digital Media (formerly Broadcasting), Digital Animation, English with Creative Writing, English with Media Studies, Film, Journalism and Public Relations for October 2009 entry as a result of the College's ambitious plans to increase its student population in order to achieve Arts University Cornwall by 2012/2013.

University College Falmouth is the only independent Higher Education institution in Cornwall with the powers to award degrees in its own name. It has two campuses in Cornwall - at Woodlane in Falmouth and Tremough in Penryn (which it owns, and jointly manages with the University of Exeter) - and a third campus at Totnes in Devon, following its merger with Dartington College of Arts in 2008.
This merger created a new institution focusing on the expansion of Falmouth's expertise in Art, Design and Media and Dartington's expertise in Choreography, Music, Theatre, Art and Writing. The Devon-based courses will relocate to a new, high-specification Performance Centre at Tremough in 2010, paving the way for a new specialist Arts University in Cornwall by 2012/2013 that will be unique to the South West.
The College is a founding partner in the Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC), a unique initiative to promote regional economic regeneration through Higher Education, funded mainly by the European Union (Objective One), the South West Regional Development Agency, and the Higher Education Funding Council for England, with support from Cornwall Council.
