Meet the Cream of Local Talent
Combined Universities in Cornwall press release
Businesses in the region are being encouraged to meet tomorrow's employees and entrepreneurs at the Cornwall Graduate Careers Fair 2009.
With many of the big national recruiters slashing their graduate trainee schemes, a growing number of students are hoping to use their skills and energy to help local businesses prosper. Thankfully, despite the wider economic gloom, Cornwall has not seen the dramatic fall in graduate vacancies experienced elsewhere in the UK.* The team behind the Cornwall Graduate Careers Fair is keen to showcase the talent coming out of the six universities and colleges working in Cornwall, and to give students and graduates a glimpse of the many exciting companies based in the region.
Allyson Glover, Head of Graduate Placements with Unlocking Cornish Potential (UCP), which is spearheading the organisation of the fair on behalf of the Combined Universities in Cornwall partnership, commented, "Cornwall's businesses and graduates have so much to offer one another. For the employer, introducing fresh knowledge and ideas can really move the business forward. The businesses we work with tell us that the average impact on turnover of taking on a graduate through the UCP scheme is £130,000. I think that speaks for itself. For a graduate, working for a smaller company often involves getting hands-on with all aspects of a business and gives them a chance to put their skills and knowledge into practice. Whether they're looking to recruit at the moment or not, I think every ambitious business should consider the opportunity the Fair offers to get a sense of the wealth of talent that's being developed in Cornwall."
The Cornwall Graduate Careers Fair, now in its 4th year, takes place at the Tremough Campus in Penryn on the 18th of November. Some 65 organisations are already signed up to take part in the Fair. Businesses which are interested in meeting Cornwall's university level students and graduates are urged to contact Nicky Luke at UCP (01209 617689 / nicky.luke@cornwall.ac.uk) to discuss the variety of opportunities for getting involved in the Fair.
