University College Falmouth Broadcast Journalism graduate, Nick Waite, has been named Reporter of the Year at the prestigious Royal Television Society (Devon & Cornwall) Programme Awards for his contribution to St Helier-based Channel Television.
Founded in 1978, the Royal Television Society Awards recognise excellence in regional programme making, and this year's awards were presented at a ceremony in Plymouth.
Since graduating from University College Falmouth's long-established and successful postgraduate diploma in Broadcast Journalism, Nick has worked as a reporter for the BBC in Guernsey; as a producer and reporter for ITV1 Westcountry; and for a number of independent radio stations.
Nick joined Channel Television just a year ago and has already delivered a number of exclusive stories regarding local and regional politics. In addition to being honoured for his talents in delivering hard news, Nick was also commended for his ability to bring character and colour to his stories and features.
"I'm thrilled to receive the award and thank Falmouth for training me to be a journalist," said Nick of his win. "I was up against some tough competition from Julie Fisher and Jonathan Gibson from ITV West Country - both are long serving reporters - but I'm delighted that Channel Television has achieved this recognition for meeting the highest standards in UK broadcasting."
"I was absolutely delighted when I heard that Nick had been nominated for Reporter of the Year in the Devon & Cornwall Royal Television Society annual awards," said Broadcast Journalism Course Leader, Dr Denis Gartside. "When he was announced as the winner at the awards ceremony, I was overwhelmed with joy," he added. "Nick really deserves this success and it just goes to show that only four years after graduating from Falmouth, you can reach the top of the profession."
