fitness masterclass

Objective One press release 29.11.2006

A fitness guru who works with professional footballers, rugby players and top class bodybuilders is giving a special diet and fitness masterclass in Bodmin.

The free, one-hour event starts at 5.30pm on Friday 8th of December 8th, at Mike Munds Fitness Studio, Church Square Mews. The talk, in association with Jason Henderson of Elixir Health Foods, will be given by expert Simon Jurkiw from Maxi Muscle. He will deliver an informative talk on the benefits of protein, and the importance of diet in an athlete's training regime.

Simon has previously worked with several British body building champions, and rugby heroes such as Ronan O' Gara, not to mention the golden boot boy of Wales, Gavin Henson. As well as working with specific individuals, Simon also works with teams, including most currently, Queens Park Rangers and Coventry City.  He is also a regular guest speaker at Universities and academic institutions and is himself a BNBF novice body builder winner.

The event has been is being promoted by Jo Lake, who joined Mike Munds as marketing manager under the Unlocking Cornish Potential (UCP) scheme. UCP is a highly successful Combined Universities in Cornwall initiative, run by Cornwall College, that has received Objective One investment.

Jo, who was born in Cornwall, graduated in English Literature and Media Communications, carrying out her BA studies at the University of Gloucestershire and MA (postmodern fictions) at University Wales Aberystwyth.

She said: "Cornwall is a magical place to live and work, and even on the bleakest of days I don't think there is anywhere else I'd rather be. My family has lived here for centuries and I think it's valuable to give something back to the community, and county, through working here. "

In the six months she has been on the UCP placement Jo has increased gym membership and interest in the gym and forged relationships with multinational companies such as Technogym, resulting in the high profile Cardio Wave launch - which raised money for sport relief through the longest day (she got people to run one mile on a treadmill and kept it going from sunrise to sunset).  She has also raised money for Asda's tickled pink campaign, raised levels of communication with gym members, started an in house monthly challenge, and generally raised awareness of the studio within the local area.

"After Christmas I will be working to introduce a new membership structure to enable more of the local community to use the facility, and I will be introducing a new nutrition range to the gym, that will be incorporated into member's workout schedules."

Mike Munds said: "Jo has been a great asset to the team since starting in June and I am looking forward to continuing working with her in the future. The programme is well run and the support from UCP is fantastic."

"I would urge everyone to come along on the 8th of December no matter what their nutritional or sporting requirements might be, I'm sure that there will be something for everyone. It's not often that we have visiting speakers and this is a great opportunity for local sports clubs and individuals to find out how to be the best they can be, by fuelling their bodies in the right way."
