Big Wednesday prize
CUC press release 20.11.2006
Kathryn Bartlett, a first year Applied Geology student studying at the Tremough Campus in Penryn, was delighted to be named the winner of £150 worth of surf gear from Big Wednesday following the very first Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC) Graduate Careers Fair on 8th November.
Over 750 students and graduates from across Cornwall entered a prize draw to win the £150 Big Wednesday voucher when they attended the Fair at Tremough. As the lucky winner, Kathryn can enjoy choosing from the huge range of surf wear, surf equipment and accessories that Big Wednesday offer from their premises in Falmouth and via their online shop www.bigwednesdaysurf.com
The Big Wednesday website itself was launched by graduate Dan Hinchliffe as part of a project arranged via the CUC's highly successful Unlocking Cornish Potential graduate placement scheme, supported by Objective One.
Kathryn was delighted with the prize "I was so surprised when I found out I had won! I've just started surfing lessons so it was really good timing too."
Kathryn, grew up in Cornwall and had completed a foundation degree in Extended Science at Cornwall College Camborne before joining her three year degree course with the University of Exeter at Tremough. Both institutions are partners in the CUC initiative. Having the option to study in Cornwall was an enormous benefit to Kathryn, who explained "I am settled here- I didn't want to go away. I never get tired of the scenery and the people here are friendly, interesting and funky!"
Speaking about the Careers Fair she was enthusiastic about the range of exhibitors and the opportunity it gave to find out more about a wide variety of career, placement and volunteering options, commenting, "It was interesting to speak to people a bit outside your field as well and I think the Fair will be even more useful in the future, especially when I approach the final year of my course".
CUC Co-ordinator, Nigel Hewitt said "We hope Kathryn enjoys spending her voucher and we would like to thank Big Wednesday for providing this fantastic prize. We have had lots of great comments from students and exhibitors about the Gradate Careers Fair and how successful they felt it was for them. For the CUC this is another positive step in bringing education and businesses closer together in Cornwall - and has illustrated just how much can be achieved towards growing the quality jobs market in Cornwall through a broad partnership of our universities, colleges and businesses".
